VERMONT CONSERVATION PAC
Vermont Conservation Political Action Committee
(VCPAC) is a political action committee that raises and spends
money for pro-environmental conservation political campaigns
and candidates.
From fishing and swimming to biking and hunting, the identity
of Vermonters is rooted in our beautiful natural resources. Although
Vermont citizens have strong connections to our environment,
many of our legislators are working to reduce protections for
clean water, clean air, and open spaces.
That is why, when it comes to conservation, who we elect matters.
Successes for Conservation in 2004
During the 2004 election season, VCPAC ran an aggressive campaign
in support of pro-conservation candidates. Ultimately, our goal
was to re-create a pro-conservation majority in the state legislature
though our electoral activity.
In 2004, VCPAC supported three very strong newcomers in
our top priority races. These newcomers were up against
long-term powerful anti-environment incumbents. All three
incumbents had an overall VACV average score of below 25%. Two
of the incumbents were the Chairs of two important committees
of the House, Transportation and Agriculture, and throughout
their tenure have never worked with the conservation community. In
their bids for re-election all three incumbents touted themselves
as being good on environmental issues.
VACV and VCPAC won two out of three of these top priority races. The
two anti-environment committee Chair’s in the Vermont House – Ruth
Towne and Frank Mazur – were defeated. Both candidates
have blamed the environment.
VCPAC also worked hard to protect incumbents who are environmental
leaders and were who were facing tough but winnable races.
